For 20 odd years Evan Peacock of Mississippi State University has been answering questions about the archaeology of his state. Now he has turned this information into a delightful little book.
This is a book for people who have a genuine interest in archaeology, but little or no formal training. In an easy to understand format, Peacock had produced a primer for artifact collectors, students, landowners, and all others with an interest in the past. He poses and answers the basic questions with the patience and humility of a good teacher. The basics of American archaeology are covered first, then he gets more specific about archaeology in Mississippi, including prehistoric Indians, slaves, military sites, and shipwrecks. Legal issues affecting landowners and collectors are also discussed. Peacock addresses Mississippi’s rich and diverse archaeology, which ranges from the earliest mounds to the Civil War. Every state has a rich archaeological legacy, and they all could use a book like this.
