The Cherokees and Their Chiefs details the misfortunes that struck the Cherokee culture as a result of European contact, in addition to later dealings with Britain, the American Colonies, and the United States that resulted in their removal from the American South to Oklahoma on the tragic Trail of Tears. It also documents their phoenix–like resurrection in political and social stature in 20th-century America. Hoig’s book focuses on the tribe’s leaders through four centuries of struggle.
