EAST—Staff from The Archaeological Conservancy’s eastern office have recently traveled to several archaeological society meetings and conferences across the region. The North Carolina Archaeological Society’s fall meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, marked its 90th year. Attendees met at Warren Wilson College for a series of papers, followed by a trip to Biltmore Estates, where archaeologist Scott Shumate gave a tour of various sites on the property.
Additionally, Conservancy staff gave presentations at the Archaeological Society of Maryland’s fall meeting and the Eastern States Archaeological Federation’s annual meeting. These talks focused on several recent site acquisitions by the Conservancy, and offered an overview on how the Conservancy acquires and manages sites.
These meetings are important for staying informed about ongoing research, as well as for networking with archaeologists and students who may be able to suggest sites the Conservancy should pursue as potential acquisitions. After attending these meetings, the eastern office has received several suggestions for sites to research and visit, which will keep the team busy over the next few months.
